Proofreading and Copy-Editing

Aside from writing, my other main skill is working with other writers to improve their work, and so I offer a flexible and thorough proofreading and copy-editing service.

WHAT ARE PROOFREADING AND COPY-EDITING?

To paraphrase the great Billy Wilder, nobody's perfect – particularly not writers. It's easy to gloss over mistakes when reading back your own work, and yet the simplest of errors can make the difference when it comes to reader comprehension. That's why copy-editors and proofreaders are needed.

Proofreading includes going over a piece of writing with a fine-toothed comb to remove any pesky errors in typing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and layout.

Copy-editing is that plus a bit more – it includes rewording or restructuring sentences to make the text flow as clearly and as naturally as possible.

One thing that a proofreader or copy-editor will never do is change the meaning of a work – what the writer wants to say. A good editor will identify what the writer is saying, and help them to say it better.

Having worked over the past few years for a theatrical script publisher and a genre magazine, I have particularly extensive experience in editing both fiction and arts-based journalism, though I am able to quickly adapt to other subjects. 

I'm also professionally qualified, having graduated with distinction a Level 4 Diploma in Proofreading and Editing from the College of Media and Publishing.

MY PROCESS

If you're interested in hiring me, get in touch via email, describing the type and length of the text, and whether you want my proofreading or copy-editing service. I will reply with a quote and approximate schedule for completion. 

When an agreement has been made, I will ask you to send me the text (I am able to work with a variety of formats, though Word document or Google Doc is preferred), then will get to work. I will track my changes, so you'll be able to see everything I've edited. 

My rates are based on industry standard, though I'm happy to give discounts where the case for their need can be made, such as to support writers from disadvantaged backgrounds. I will invoice you only when the work is completed to your satisfaction and accept pay via bank transfer or PayPal.
